Symbolism

SHIELD

The double rompu chevron reversed portrays the breaking of ice upon the bow of a ship, indicating the primary mission of the USCGC Biscayne Bay. The blue base of the shield alludes to the Great Lakes Michigan and Huron, in dexter and sinister respectively. The green field suggests the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in both green for land and the shape created by the broken chevron. The silver spheres in chief are representative of processed Taconite pellets, which refer to OPERATION TACONITE, the ships main mission of ice breaking as well as the escorting of ships transporting the native mineral.

CREST

The Mackinac Bridge and White Shoal Lighthouse are both iconic and significant to the region. The bridge is considered the gateway to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and connects to the ships home port of St. Ignace. The lighthouse is a guiding light as both a symbol and purpose. The elk and moose are adapted from the Great Seal of Michigan, in tribute to the ships area of responsibility.

MOTTO

SENTINEL OF THE STRAITS refers to the ships duties in the Great Lakes region, primarily the straits of Mackinac which connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

SUPPORTERS

The spear recalls the sentinel aspect of the motto, alluding to law enforcement, a secondary mission of the ship. The rope hook alludes to the search and rescue operations also carried out by the crew.

SEAL
